One of the very few coastal towns in Iceland not dependent on fishing, Borgarnes is a friendly town that has lots to attract tourists including golf, angling, hunting and swimming.
Not only that, in the surrounding countryside there are hot springs, lakes, rivers and beautiful waterfalls. According to the Egil’s Saga, the area occupied by the town was once called Digranes.
West of the town is Brákarey island, which is connected to the mainland by a bridge. This was named after Egil’s slave Thorgerdur brak.
