The natural stone labyrinth of Dimmuborgir is located to the east of Lake Mývatn. It is composed of several rock formations and caves, the best known of which is probably Kirkjan, the ‘Church’.
Dimmuborgir a magnificent lava landscape with strange formations, columns, caves, arches, etc. It seems this was formed from a lava-lake, out of which molten lave flowed, causing much upheaval. One of the strangest spots is Kirkjan („the church“), an enormous arch.
Dimmuborgir is under threat of silting up with windblown sand from the highlands and parts have in the past been totally submerged.
