Fáskrúðsfjörður is a small village nestling on a long fjord of the same name. The village was originally a base for French fishermen who came every year in large numbers to fish the abundant Icelandic waters.
The village had a French hospital, chapel and cemetery and even today, all the streets of Fáskrúðsfjörður are marked in both Icelandic and French. If you visit in the last weekend in July, you can join in with the ‘French Days’ festival, visit a fascinating museum and the French cemetery.
If you like walking, there are many trails in the area around the village where you can enjoy the beautiful wildlife.
