Itinerary
The Tour in a Nutshell
This package gives you the opportunity to kick back and enjoy a relaxing time with your travel companion(s) on the south coast of Iceland. The south coast has a varied scenery of stunning natural beauty. It offers many great possibilities for outdoor activities and has plenty of family-friendly attractions. This tour offers more time for discovery, both for the more adventurous travelers, who wish to explore their surroundings on their own, and for those who wish to travel more leisurely. This tour is also well suited to the Icelandic winter, when shorter travel distances are advisable due to shorter daylengths and unpredictably changing weather conditions.
Highlights:
Reykjavik, Þingvellir National Park, the great Geysir area, Gullfoss, Hekla, Skógar, Vík, Reykjanes Peninsula and the Blue lagoon.
Tour Outline
Day 1: A Day in Reykjavík
Arrival at Keflavík international airport. Overnight in central Reykjavik, at Fosshótel Barón or similar. Transfer from the airport to Reykjavík is not included.
Day 2: Þingvellir National Park
In the morning, you will pick up your rental car. You have a full day´s scenic driving ahead of you, taking in some of the best-known natural phenomena in Iceland. Your first stop will be Þingvellir National Park, where you have plenty of time to walk around or go on a short hike. Þingvellir is a remarkable place that brings together geological and historical points of interest with extraordinary nature. For the hiking enthusiast, Hengill geothermal area at the other end of the lake offers fantastic hiking routes. If you are interested in more unconventional activities, you can snorkel or dive in the crystal clear and ice cold waters of the Silfra fissure, in the national park, with equipment and guidance provided by professionals. Drive on to see the implosion crater Kerið and Skálholt. Overnight at Hótel Hekla or similar where you’ll spend the next 3 nights. -Driving distance approx. 150 km.
Day 3: Spouting Geyser and the Golden Waterfall
Enjoy the morning in the peaceful countryside of South Iceland, with its amazing views of the mountains on the horizon. Today´s drive will bring you to some of Iceland’s best known locations—two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall, the great Geysir area, and of course more if you wish. Near Geysir, you might be interested in either a riding tour on an Icelandic pony or an exciting ATV tour around the area. In summer, rafting down Hvítá is yet another option. During the summer months, provided you have a good 4X4 car, you might even drive to Landmannalaugar in the highlands, or to the volcano Hekla. Second night on location. -Driving distance approx. 150 km.
Day 4: A day of Contrasts
Explore the South Coast, including the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls and the Dyrhólaey and Reynisdrangar rock formations on the black sand beach south of Vík. Dyrhólaey is ideal for viewing the diverse birdlife (closed to traffic during the nesting season in May to the end of June). Sometimes seals can be seen swimming around by the shore or resting on the rocks. Mýrdalsjökull glacier is a different world—with a good car you can drive up to the glacier’s edge and take optional tours there, snowmobiling, glacier hiking, or dog sledding, providing there is a sufficient amount of snow on the glacier. Third night on location. -Driving distance approx. 280 km.
Day 5: Return to Reykjavik
Continue to the village of Hveragerði, where fruit and vegetables are grown for local consumption in geothermally heated greenhouses—a stroll around the geo-active area is recommended. You will not regret stopping for a meal at one of the charming seaside restaurants specializing in seafood, on your way back to Reykjavík. The last leg of your journey consists of crossing the Hellisheiði heath to Reykjavík, or if you feel a little more adventurous, you might consider continuing along the south coast of the Reykjanes peninsula. On your way, you can visit Krýsuvík’s bubbling mud pots, the lake Kleifarvatn, Reykjanesviti lighthouse, and the continental bridge over the continental divide, finally ending with a dip in the Blue Lagoon. Overnight in central Reykjavik, at Fosshótel Barón or similar.
Day 6: Departure
Time to head back home after your splendid adventures in Iceland. —Transfer to Keflavík Airport is not included
