Tour Outline
Day 1:Arrival/Reykjavík
Arrival at Iceland’s international airport. Spend the night in central Reykjavík, at Fosshótel Barón or similar. Transfer from the airport to Reykjavík is not included.
Day 2: Gullfoss and Geysir
Take in some of Iceland´s greatest natural marvels in the south of Iceland. Start by going to Þingvellir National Park, the old gathering place of Alþingi, the world´s oldest parliament. After walking in the Almannagjá ravine, formed by the gradual drifting apart of the Eurasian and North-American tectonic plates, you continue to the great Geysir area to see hot springs blast their boiling water into the air, and then the grand Gullfoss waterfall. Stop by the old bishopry at Skálholt and the implosion crater Kerið, now dormant and partially filled with water. Spend the night at Hótel Hekla or similar . -Driving distance approx. 200 km.
Day 3: Vatnajökull National Park
Drive east to Vatnajökull National Park, taking a few stops along the way. Skaftafell and its surroundings is a place of great natural beauty with many interesting hiking trails, including a fairly easy path leading to the beautiful Svartifoss waterfall. Spend the night at Fosshotel Skaftafell or similar -Driving distance approx. 220 km.
Day 4: Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon
Start the day in Vatnajökulll National Park, Europe´s largest national park, and drive on to the Glacial Lagoon Jökulsárlón, where you can go on a boat ride among the floating icebergs. Once back on terra firma, you can catch a ride in a local farmer’s hay cart (optional) to cape Ingólfshöfði for an up-close view of a puffin colony. Spend the night at Fosshotel Skaftafell or similar -Driving distance approx. 80 km.
Day 5: The South Coast
Head back to the south Coast and visit some of the highlights skipped on the way east. Walk along the stunning black volcanic sand beach south of Vík. From the beach, you have an excellent view of the rock formations, Dyrhólaey and Reynisdrangar, shaped by—and still gracefully resisting—the pounding waves of the Atlantic. Further west, walk up to the picture-perfect waterfalls, Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss. In Skógar, you will also find a folk museum with many interesting artifacts on display. Spend the night at Hótel Höfðabrekka or similar. -Driving distance approx. 150 km.
Day 6: Back to Reykjavík
Drive along the south coast, back to Reykjavík. Worthwhile stops along this route are Stokkseyri, Hveragerði, and Hellisheiði. A drive around the Reykjanes peninsula, a true volcanic wonderland, is surely recommended for those who wish to make the most of the day with just a short detour. Spend the night in central Reykjavík at Fosshótel Barón or similar. -Driving distance approx. 190 km.
