WELCOME TO THE NORTH

Swedish castle hopping and the fittest royal wedding

Once Europe´s greatest empire, the avant-garde of fashion and arts, with the most lavish castles, the Swedish royal house has now re-emerged to the international limelight. Sweden is holding its breath in anticipation of a forthcoming royal wedding. On the 19th of June, Crown Princess Victoria is set to marry her long-time companion, fitness trainer Daniel Westling.

It´s a modern take on the fairytale of Cinderella: A common boy from the village moves to the big city to try his luck at burning calories and pumping iron. One fine day, while flexing his muscles and daydreaming about opening a fitness studio of his own, to make his notoriously health-conscious countrymen even sportier, he runs into the sweaty Princess.

Luckily, he does not have to be home before midnight, he does not have particularly small feet and the Princess does not have to stage a nationwide search for him to get a second glance – she knows where he works (out). To cut a long story short: After seven years of weightlifting, jogging and skiing together, the couple got the King´s approval.

Such was the public interest in the matter, that the Royal Court website collapsed under the torrent of visitors following the King´s announcement of his daughter´s engagement. The media has since had more than a year to speculate on every detail regarding the ceremony and the lives of Sweden´s future Queen and King. Who will be on the guest list? What designer gets picked to tailor the wedding dress? Does Victoria have any secrets? Has Mr. Westling (soon to be Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland) mastered the art of small-talking? What is for dinner? Where will the couple spend their honeymoon? And where will they be living as a married couple?

For those who want to take part in the royal wedding frenzy, or get an up-close look at Sweden´s many well preserved castles and manor houses from the golden days, we have a good selection of tours. Check out Castles and manor houses at leisure (price from €624 p.p) or the slightly faster express tour (price from €401 p.p). Most of our self drive vacation packages in Sweden will give you a chance to see old castles or castle ruins.

One thing is certain, with the recent engagement of Crown Princess Victoria´s little sister, Madeleine, the Swedish royal family will stay in the spotlight for some time to come.
