WELCOME TO THE NORTH

Announcement regarding the volcanic eruption

Dear Friends.

A volcano has erupted near Eyjafjallajokull glacier in south Iceland. The eruption is being described as small and the amount of ash created is also small at this time. As one of Iceland´s geologist said, “this is the best possible place for an eruption” as it does not take place under the ice cap so there is no risk of floods caused by melting glacier waters at this time. Volcanic eruptions in Iceland occur every few years or on average every 4-5 years. Last eruption in Iceland was in 2004.

When the eruption began at midnight on the 21st of March it was not known how big it was nor the exact location. Therefore around 550 residents in the area were asked to evacuate their homes for precaution. Most of them have been allowed to return to their homes. Also flights to and from Iceland were stopped for few hours that morning until the size of the eruption was known.

Geologists are monitoring the situation and as for now the eruption has no affect on travel to/from Iceland and does not cause any threat to travellers in Iceland. All our tours are running as scheduled.
