WELCOME TO THE NORTH

Iceland - Still Shining in 2011

Iceland couldn‘t stay out of the spotlight even if it tried.

Indeed, this remote island in the North Atlantic was quite the diva in 2010. First, Lonely Planet named Iceland as one of the Top 10 Value Destinations for 2010, a welcome addition to the list of usual suspects like Mexico and Thailand. Then, the island seized the world spotlight with not one, but two spectacular eruptions of volcanoes with difficult names followed by the energetic “Inspired by Iceland” campaign, featuring tributes to Iceland from international celebrities like Viggo Mortensen and Yoko Ono. Finally, among other accolades, Reykjavik topped the list of Top 10 Places to Spend your Christmas by CNN.

And now in the New Year, Iceland finds itself in the limelight again thanks to USA Today Travel, which named Iceland as a Top Travel Destination for 2011 and Lonely Planet, which listed Iceland’s Westfjords region as one of Top 10 Regions in its Best in Travel 2011 guide.  Just what is it about Iceland that makes it such a popular place?

Besides the obvious things, like the incredible natural phenomena and the favourable exchange rate for tourists, Iceland is also a lot easier to get to in 2011. In June, Delta will begin its New York-Iceland route and Iceland Express has added Boston and Chicago to its summer destinations for 2011.  Icelandair will also expand both their European and North American destinations and flight schedules in summer.  There’s never been a better time to visit!
