Olympic Hall Hamar in Norway

A medieval gem on the shores of Lake Mjøsa

Hamar sits on the shores of Lake Mjøsa, Norway’s largest lake. The wide waters reflect the surrounding hills and farmland, giving the city a relaxing charm. Its history stretches back to medieval times, when Hamar Cathedral, built in the 12th century, stood at the centre of a thriving community.

Stroll along the lakeside promenade, or visit the Hedmark Museum, where Iron Age relics and medieval buildings are carefully preserved. The cathedral ruins are housed in an enormous steel and glass shelter nicknamed the “Glass Cathedral”. With cafés and restaurants nearby, take a moment to pause and enjoy the views.

While you’re here, you could take a cruise on the world’s oldest working paddle steamer, the DS Skibladner. This striking white boat with gold details was built in the 1850s and still runs with its original steam engines more than 160 years later.

Along with nearby Lillehammer, Hamar hosted the 1994 Winter Olympic Games. You can visit the Hamar Olympic Hall, known as the “Viking Ship” for its unique rooftop, and the Northern Lights Hall sports arenas, both reminders of the city’s modern sporting heritage.
