Norway’s “Home of the Giants”
According to Norwegian mythology, Jotunheimen is the home of trolls and giants. However, its nickname, “The Home of the Giants”, has more to do with the fact that all of Norway’s 29 highest mountains can be found here. The national park has become a popular destination for both nature lovers and outdoor sports enthusiasts.
Galdhøpiggen, the region’s tallest mountain soaring 2,469 meters (8,100 feet) into the sky, is reached via a toll road from Bøverdalen with a short walk to the summit. And if you drive the national scenic route over the Sognefjell Mountains between Luster and Lom, you’ll have a spectacular view of Store Skagastølstind or “Storen”, the third highest peak at 2,403 meters (7,884 feet) tall.
Here you’ll find one of the most hiked routes in Norway, the Besseggen trail, which attracts about 40,000 hikers each year. This 6-hour hike runs across the narrow Besseggen ridge, with breathtaking views of the Gjende and Bessvatn lakes on either side. The park is also home to the incredible Svellnosbreen glacier, and guided tours are available to get closer to the dramatic ice formations.
