Visit a vast collection of works by the famous artist behind "The Scream"
The Munch Museum (“Munch Museet”) houses the largest collection of works by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, best known internationally for his iconic wailing figure, The Scream. Munch donated his entire collection of over 23,000 artworks and numerous other personal artefacts to the city of Oslo. This small museum is located a short walk from the botanical gardens, where the artist spent his youth.
Inside, the layout allows you to move through Munch’s paintings, prints and personal sketches at your own pace. You’ll see how his work evolved over time, how he experimented with colour and form, and how he was inspired by Oslo and its surroundings. There are also temporary exhibitions showing contemporary Norwegian and international art.
After exploring, pause for a refreshment in the museum café, which offers wonderful views across the same harbour that inspired this world-famous painter.
