To enjoy the outdoors like a local, do as the Norwegians do and hit the trails. Nordmarka is a vast forested region stretching north of Oslo, with shimmering lakes, dense pine woods, and quiet tracks that feel a world away from the bustling capital.
Locals flock to the Nordmarka woodlands for hiking, running, biking and picnics in summer, with sledding and cross-country skiing especially popular in winter.
Located north of the famous Holmenkollen Ski Jump, it’s about 20 minutes by car from the city centre, but many walking and cycling routes are also accessible by public transit. Some good starting points into the forest include Holmenkollen, Frognerseteren, Sørkedalen and Sognsvann. For a free simple map of the area, visit the Oslo Visitor Centre.
