Oslo’s historic cathedral, home of royal weddings
The Oslo Cathedral (“Oslo Domkirke”) is the main church for the diocese of Oslo as well as the official setting for prominent events such as elaborate royal wedding ceremonies. Dedicated in 1697, the cathedral has been reconstructed and renovated many times throughout the centuries.
In the 1850s, the baroque interior was reimagined in the neo-gothic style, but it was restored to its original form in the 1960s. During this restoration, many beautiful decorative elements from the 18th century were uncovered. Marvel at the painted ceiling and watch the light filter through stunning stained-glass windows.
48 bells situated within the towers chime various melodies on the hour and quarter-hour throughout the day and can be heard across the city. You may hear them before you see them! The cathedral is free to enter or to attend a service. However, donations are encouraged for sightseers. Additional self-guided and audio tours are also available.
