Visit one of the most beautiful railways in the world
The Flåm Railway, or “the little green train,” is one of the world’s most scenic rail routes. It travels 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Myrdal to Flåm, descending 865 metres (2,837 feet) through 20 tunnels, steep mountainsides, and spectacular fjord valleys, offering an unforgettable journey full of dramatic views.
Make sure to have your camera ready, as views include snow-capped peaks, rippling rivers, small farms clinging to the hillsides and roaring waterfalls. Thankfully for photographers, the train moves along at a relatively slow pace and even stops at the dramatic Kjosfossen waterfall. If you’re lucky, you might spot the legendary “Huldra”, an elusive forest spirit from Norse mythology.
This train ride is part of the popular Norway in a Nutshell® tours, which also includes a 2-hour ferry-cruise between Flåm and Gudvangen through the Nærøyfjord.
Next to the station in Flåm is the Flåm Railway Documentation Centre, where you can browse exhibits about the railway's impressive construction efforts starting in the 1920s, its unique engineering and the history of the village.
