The Viking village surrounded by dramatic scenery
Gudvangen, which roughly translates to “field of the gods by the water”, has been receiving cruise ships in its harbour since the 1850s. Situated at the end of the picture-perfect Nærøyfjord, this charming little fjord village has a rich Viking history and around 100 inhabitants.
Surrounded by dramatic cliffs that plunge into the fjords below, the village is framed by waterfalls, mountains and forests. Beautiful reflections and a changing sky make for stunning images for budding photographers.
You can enjoy fjord cruises, kayaking and hiking in the nearby mountains. Trails lead to waterfalls, forest paths and viewpoints over the narrow fjord, while boat trips reveal the steep cliffs and peaceful waters from a unique perspective.
This is the starting point for the fjord cruise part of the popular Norway in a Nutshell® journey between Oslo and Bergen.
