Step into Norway’s past at the Trøndelag Folk Museum
Located on the west side of Trondheim is the Trøndelag Folk Museum (“Trøndelag Folkemuseum”), a fascinating museum of cultural history. With a large open-air section featuring over 60 buildings, it’s an immersive way to learn more about how people in the city lived in days gone by.
You can explore the castle ruins of King Sverre or visit the Lion Pharmacy and Photographer’s House, showcasing Trondheim’s historic trades and daily life.
Inside, the “Livsbilder” exhibition displays artefacts from the past 150 years, including clothing, school items and sleds. Interactive workshops allow visitors to try traditional crafts, baking and woodworking. Seasonal events, such as Christmas markets and midsummer celebrations, bring history to life and offer an engaging, hands-on insight into Trøndelag’s rich cultural heritage.
Make sure to check out the Sverresborg Ski Museum whilst you’re here, which tells the story of skiing both as a competitive sport and as a practical means of transport throughout Norwegian history.
