A medieval gem between Italy's Iseo and Lecco lakes

Take some time to visit the splendid medieval city of Bergamo. Though not as famous as its chic neighbour, Milan, Bergamo is still an enchanting destination in its own right. Its impressive history and atmospheric architecture are sure to delight you.

The history of Bergamo stretches back thousands of years, when Iron Age and Celtic tribes battled to rule the region. In 49 BCE, the Romans established a municipality here, which was destroyed around 400 years later by Attila the Hun. As a result, you’ll notice Roman ruins alongside incredible architecture from the centuries since.

Head to the historic Upper Town (“Citta Altà”) district, encircled by 16th-century walls, to discover grand churches such as Bergamo Cathedral in the Piazza Duomo. Then visit the Piazza Vecchia to see Roman ruins and the lavish New Palace (“Palazzo Nuevo”).

The city’s Lower Town (“Città Bassa”) is packed with winding residential streets and administrative buildings. One of the must-see attractions in Città Bassa is the Accademia Carrara, an extensive art gallery that’s been open to the public since 1785.
