Spectacular gothic masterpiece in Milan's beating heart
The heart of vibrant Milan is the Piazza del Duomo, a sprawling main square which acts as both a gathering place and a gateway to the city. When you arrive here, though, the first thing you’ll notice is sure to be the magnificent Milan Cathedral (“Duomo di Milano”).
This spectacular church took nearly 600 years to complete, which is easy to believe when you’re standing under its grand silhouette. Though the first stones were laid in the 14th century, it was only finished in 1965. Not only is this Italy’s largest church, but it’s the 3rd-largest in the world!
Because of the cathedral’s long history, you’ll see many different architectural and artistic influences throughout its structure. Think intricate sculptures, reverent tombs and lavish altars, as well as a magnificent pipe organ – the largest in Italy.
To experience a spellbinding view of Milan stretching out below you, you might want to purchase tickets to climb onto the Duomo’s roof. Around 200 steps lead up there, but you can make your journey a little easier by taking a lift up the first 110.
We recommend pre-booking the Duomo lift for easy access to its terraces. Though please note you’ll need to come down via the stairs.
