Pastel-coloured, historic lake town with lush greenery and lake views
When you’re in the area, it’s only right to visit the town that gave its name to Lake Garda. This beautiful spot is nestled in a scenic bay on the eastern shore of the lake. You’ll want to spend some time experiencing its picturesque views and charming ambiance.
Garda’s main attraction is its laid-back vibe, which you can enjoy throughout the town. Walk through the historic centre to feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Get lost in the narrow, winding streets. You’ll find little boutiques, pastel-coloured buildings and lively cafés along the way, all exuding a quintessential Italian charm.
The promenade is a must-see, with incredible views of the lake, lush hills and olive groves all around. You’ll be spoilt for choice with the restaurants here, with many having lakeside terraces. Boats depart from the pier for other towns like Bardolino, Sirmione and Salò.
Or head further afield in the town to see medieval landmarks. These include the ancient Santa Maria Assunta church, dating to the 10th century.
If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, you’ll also find plenty of activities to keep you busy in Garda. The town serves as a gateway to numerous hiking and cycling trails that weave through the surrounding hills.
On one of these hills to the south you’ll see an impressive fortress called La Rocca. This is the historic defence of the town and separates it from nearby Bardolino. La Rocca was built in the 5th century by the Lombards. Its original name was Garda, which was then passed on to the lake.
