Shakespearean city of romantic love and Roman ruins
Verona is an Italian city rich in history and that is sure to leave a mark on your imagination. It was founded in the 1st century and came into particular prominence during the Italian Renaissance.
The historic centre is home to an impressive collection of Roman architectural remains. This includes the city gate, the Arco dei Gavi (an ancient archway) and an ancient amphitheatre. These historic ruins sit alongside architecture from the 13th, 15th, 18th, and 21st centuries, forming a melting pot of structural design.
Together, these buildings are a remarkable sight to behold. And it’s this rich history that has earned Verona a spot as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Famous for being an incredibly romantic city, it’s no surprise that Verona was the inspiration for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Visitors come from all over the world to walk along the same cobblestoned streets as the play’s leads.
As well as its famed architecture and culture, Verona’s food and wine are well worth the experience. Local delicacies include risotto, fresh pasta and pandoro. And when it comes to wine, the Valpolicella region supplies the majority of local tipples.
Verona is the perfect city to soak up north Italian atmosphere, with fewer visitors than cities like Venice. Whether you want to explore the sights or while away time people-watching with a crisp glass of white in hand, you’ll be able to enjoy plenty of both here.
