Meet the Lake Kleifarvatn monster

Not far from the geothermal areas of Krýsuvík and Seltún is Kleifarvatn, the third largest lake in southern Iceland. With its surreal volcanic surroundings, this lake holds plenty of trout in addition to another creature that is said to inhabit these waters: a worm-like monster the size of a whale. Kleifarvatn is also known to be sensitive to climate and geological changes and has been used as a natural rain gauge. After an earthquake struck the region in 2000, 20% of the lake’s surface level vanished but by 2008 the original level was nearly restored.
