VISIT THE GEM OF THE WEST

Achill Island is a not-so-secret gem in the west of Ireland. Easily accessible via a bridge across the Achill Sound, it’s well worth the trip.

There’s plenty to see and do here, but your visit can be as active or relaxing as you want. Amidst all the fun, make sure you have time to sample the fresh Atlantic seafood!

Not only is Achill the largest island off the Irish coast but it’s also steeped in history and home to gorgeous scenery. The island was first inhabited 5,000 years ago, so there’s plenty of fascinating history to delve into.

Here you’ll find ancient forts, deserted dwellings and megalithic tombs. These age-old monuments add a mysterious element to the atmosphere of the island.

Explore inland and you’ll come across the Deserted Village, one of the island’s popular attractions. It’s made up of the remains of more than 80 houses that were abandoned in the 19th century.

Time your visit for summer, and you can enjoy the island's beaches while the weather is at its best. Make for Keem Bay, for instance, and discover a small cove with crystal-clear, turquoise water that’s reminiscent of the Caribbean. On the other hand, Keel Beach is ideal if you’re seeking more adventurous watersports, such as surfing.

You could also uncover some of the set locations used in The Banshees of Inisherin, Martin McDonagh’s 2022 film. With so many dramatic landscapes dotted around the island, it’s not hard to see why Achill was used as a backdrop.
