MEET IRELAND’S ONE TRUE FJORD

Killary Harbour, located on the west coast of Ireland, is Ireland’s only true fjord. The Atlantic Ocean flows inland for 16 kilometres (10 miles), ending at Aasleagh. Picturesque Aasleagh Falls is just a few minutes away.

The fjord forms a natural border between County Mayo and Galway, and offers some truly spectacular views, some say the best in western Ireland.

Killary is not only a long fjord, but also very deep, over 45 metres (148 feet) at its deepest. Flanked by mountains to the north and south, it is therefore a sheltered and pleasant fjord for boating, fishing and other water sports.

Regular boat trips set sail along the fjord if you want to discover the area.  Outdoor enthusiasts may also enjoy scuba diving, or even hillwalking in the area. Birdwatchers will also find plenty to spot in this famous bird sanctuary.

Mussels and clams farms sit along the fjords and you may be able to spot them in the water.
