The gateway to the Amalfi Coast

This port city sits at the southern end of the Amalfi Coast, and balances true Amalfi coastal charm with a grounded, functional side. University students rub shoulders with dock workers, and locals browse morning markets steps away from medieval churches and waterfront promenades.

The medieval centre clusters around Via dei Mercanti, a pedestrian street lined with shops, cafés, and palazzo facades layered with various eras of architectural history. The impressive atrium mixes Arab-Norman arches with columns stripped from Paestum, creating visual impact that truly needs to be seen to be believed.

Salerno’s medical school was the first in Europe, founded in the 9th century. The Giardino della Minerva, a terraced medicinal garden, commemorates that tradition with plants used in medieval remedies. Climb to the upper levels for views across rooftops to the sea.

The lungomare promenade stretches for kilometres along the waterfront. Wide, palm-lined, and used by locals for their morning commute or evening passeggiata.

Salerno makes a practical base for the coast. Trains connect to Naples and Paestum. Ferries run to Positano, Amalfi, and Capri. Restaurants serve real Campanian food: buffalo mozzarella, gulf seafood, scialatielli with clams that tastes like the sea itself.
