Castelli Romani Regional Park

Volcanic lakes, hilltop villages and wine

Have you ever wondered where an ancient Roman noble or a medieval Pope would holiday? It would need to be beautiful, near Rome, and secluded. With nature and home comforts. And of course, grand, sweeping views. Such a place exists, and its name is Castelli Romani.

The regional park is on Rome’s southern outskirts. Cicero himself had a villa here. While at his villa, he missed the buzz of Rome. While in the city, he longed for the peace of his villa. We all know the feeling. Heading south for Naples? Castelli Romani is worth a diversion.

Little villages await your curious feet as you snake down cobbled lanes and alleyways into beautiful old squares.

Pass through the peperino walls of Lanuvio and steep yourself in a potent medieval atmosphere. A refreshing fountain pours in the town square. A double tower, once part of a fortress, is now a wine-maker’s meeting place. Enjoy a glass of the local plonk.

Want to admire a Baroque masterpiece away from the hubbub of Rome’s centre? The Piazza di Corte complex of Ariccia, with its Chigi Palace and its Church of Santa Maria Assunta is for you. They were designed by Bernini and Fontana themselves.

Or if nature is more your speed, Lake Nemi basks in the basin below Genzano village. Enjoy a visit there, and a walk around the water’s edge for something more peaceful.

Many of these sites sit along the ancient Roman road to Italy’s southeast, the Via Appia. Follow along behind the greats of Roman history, and learn how to relax, Roman-style.
