Five cliffside villages stitched together by coastal trails

Cinque Terre clings to Liguria's cliffs like a defiant work of art. Five villages, impossibly stacked, where the scent of basil mingles with salt spray. A World Heritage Site that feels like stepping into a postcard.

Visit them all. Or pick one that resonates with you. They have their own personalities and quirks. In each, expect pastel houses stacked vertically against cliffsides and charming little marinas. Façades weathered by centuries of Mediterranean storms into a painter's palette of ochre, terracotta and sea-foam green.

Medieval inhabitants carved impossibly steep terraces into coastal mountains. They created the “heroic viticulture” that produces Cinque Terre's distinctive wines. The hand-built stone walls represent over a millennium of backbreaking agricultural artistry.

Monterosso first. Striped umbrellas dot the only real beach. The promenade buzzes with aperitivo chatter, focaccia warm from stone ovens, waves lapping at your feet. Then Vernazza's harbour stops you in your tracks. Houses crowd impossibly close, their shutters sun-bleached and perfect. Fishing nets dry in tangles. The medieval watchtower catches the golden hour just right.

Corniglia sits alone on its clifftop. Quieter. The climb up leaves you breathless, but those views? Worth it. The entire coast unfolds, vineyard terraces plunging towards that deep blue. Manarola is next, fortress-like and vertical. Locals dive from sun-warmed rocks. The sweet Sciacchetrà wine tastes of these steep slopes, hand-worked for centuries.

Last but certainly not least, Riomaggiore tumbles down its ravine in a riot of colour. Washing flutters between narrow alleys. The tiny harbour glints. Those ancient stone walls climbing the hillside? A thousand years of stubborn human determination carved into rock.

The Sentiero Azzurro (“Blue Trail”) winds between them through wild thyme and rosemary. The Mediterranean crashes below. Each village appears suddenly around the bend. A striking reveal every time.
