A city carved into volcanic rock, with a cathedral to match
Perched high on a volcanic plateau, Orvieto looks down over the Umbrian countryside like it has always belonged there. From the train station, the funicular saves you a significant hike up the hill, giving you a first taste of the vineyards and olive groves that stretch for miles.
The Duomo dominates the main square, its Gothic façade bright with mosaics and sculptures. Step inside and linger by the Cappella del Corporale as you admire its detailed frescoes.
Take a wander through the cobbled streets and alleys. Pop into artisan shops, stop for a coffee in a small piazza, or duck into a bakery to grab a biscotti. Notice the stray cats that sun themselves on the steps, they’re some of the real locals that make up this historic community.
Beneath the streets, a network of tunnels and caves stretches for kilometres, carved from the soft volcanic rock known as tufa. Some date as far back as 2,500 years to the Etruscan civilisation. Originally dug for storage, escape routes and wells, you can venture down there on a tour if you're interested in this town’s ancient underbelly.
