Settlement Exhibition

Visit the Viking-Age exhibition.

The Settlement Exhibition Reykjavík 871±2 came to be when, in 2001, construction on Reykjavík’s central Aðalstræti uncovered archaeological remains that turned out to be the oldest relics of human habitation in Reykjavík. A wall fragment dating to 871 AD (give or take 2 years) and a hall or longhouse from the 10th century were among the findings.

The Settlement Exhibition was then conceptualized and constructed around these structures so that visitors could learn more about the history of Reykjavík’s settlement through relics uncovered during the excavation and through historical texts referencing the settlement of the first Reykjavík farmstead.

The Settlement Exhibition Reykjavík 871±2 is open to visitors daily from 09:00 to 20:00. It is located at Aðalstræti 16.
