Magical seaborne city of canals and cathedrals

Venice (“Venezia”), the capital of the Veneto region, is a spellbinding island city within the Venetian Lagoon. Once the seat of great power within Italy – and even Europe – it is now a popular destination among tourists from all over the globe.

The city is unlike anywhere else in the world. There are no roads (and as such no cars, motorbikes or trucks) to be found on the island. Instead, the city is built around a network of over 100 canals.

These waterways act as the roads, with hundreds of boats moving from one to another day in, day out. Not every vessel can traverse every canal, however. Some of the smaller canals are only accessible to gondolas and sàndolo.

Every street around every corner here is packed with historic buildings. The architecture spans centuries, with feats of byzantine, Renaissance and Gothic design. Wherever you look there’s something new for you to marvel at.

This beauty has remained true throughout the years. Venice is a city that has been endlessly depicted in art and literature, a muse for artists and writers alike. It’s this romanticism which has built the city’s reputation as a must-visit for couples.
