What to expect on your Norway in a Nutshell® by Fjord Tours journey from Oslo
The route unfolds in stages, each one more dramatic than the last. Here’s what’s ahead.
The Bergen Railway
The Bergensbanen is one of the world’s greatest train rides. You’ll board in Oslo and cross Hardangervidda, Europe’s highest mountain plateau, where the landscape strips back to open tundra and frozen lakes. Keep your eyes on the window. Reindeer aren’t shy.
The Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana)
At Myrdal, 866 metres (2,841 feet) up, you switch to the famous Flåm Railway. 20 kilometres (12 miles) of steep descent. Eleven tunnels. And the thundering Kjosfossen waterfall. The train stops here on purpose. You’ll see why. The line drops you in the village of Flåm, right at the water’s edge.
The Fjord cruise
From Flåm, you board a ferry and glide into the Aurlandsfjord, then through the UNESCO-protected Nærøyfjord. Cliffs rise sheer from the water. Waterfalls catch the light. And for 2 hours, the only sound is the boat cutting through stillness.
The Nærøydalen Valley
A coach ride carries you through the valley to Voss, where you board the train for the final leg to Bergen. Nicknamed “Gateway to the Fjords”, this harbour town is pressed between the country’s longest fjord, Sognefjord, and the majestic Hardangerfjord.
Why take the journey with us?
The Norway in a Nutshell® by Fjord Tours from Oslo to Bergen route can be done in a single day. But some journeys are too good to rush. Our packages turn the experience into something bigger.
Stay longer in the places that matter – an extra night in Flåm with the fjord outside your window, a few days exploring Oslo or Bergen, or a coastal cruise further north.
Some of our tours extend south to Stavanger and Pulpit Rock. Others pair the route with a Geirangerfjord cruise, where you’ll pass the Seven Sisters and Bridal Veil waterfalls.
Unlike booking the route on its own, our packages come with handpicked accommodation, a personalised itinerary, and 24/7 support while you’re travelling.
