Itinerary

A day-by-day plan to guide your journey.

  • Day 1: Welcome to Venice

You’ve arrived in Italy. The winding canals and hidden alleyways of the Floating City await you. The best way to get to know Venice is to leave your map in your bag and let yourself wander freely through the maze of streets.

With no cars allowed in the old town, you’ll find yourself surrounded by water, bridges, and that particular Venetian air. Take the long route to St Mark’s Square, a centuries-old gathering place for Venetians and visitors alike. Here, you’re beneath the spires of the city’s most famous basilica. Its mosaics of Byzantine gold glitter in the sunlight.

This evening, follow your nose to a local trattoria for your first Italian dinner of the trip. The local speciality is cicchetti – a small-plates medley of bruschetta with various toppings, commonly served in bàcari (wine bars).

Stay at the Hotel Sant'Elena or similar in Venice/Mestre.

  • Day 2: Venice’s gleaming canals

This morning you'll join a walking tour, led by a local. Hear the secrets of la regina dell'Adriatico – “the queen of the Adriatic” - as you’re shown down hidden alleys and past thousands of years of architectural mastery.

Return to St Mark’s Square to marvel at the Venetian Gothic Doge’s Palace, then stroll across the historic Rialto Bridge, the first stone crossing on the Grand Canal. Finish up your tour with a gondola ride. Sit back and relax as your gondolier guides your boat gently down some of the oldest travel routes in Italy.

The rest of the afternoon is yours. Return to some of the spots you passed earlier, or find a side-street café to linger over a fresh espresso. Art lovers should seek out the Scuola Grande di San Rocco – Tintoretto's paintings fill the walls, floor to ceiling.

Stay another night at the Hotel Sant'Elena or similar in Venice/Mestre.

    Included:
    • Breakfast at your accommodation
    • Guided walking tour of Venice
    • Gondola ride

Average travel & exploration time: 4 hours

  • Day 3: The road to Florence via elegant Bologna

Time to trade Venice’s canals for the rolling hills of Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany. Along with your guide, board the bus, and set off southwards.

Halfway to your destination, you’ll stop in the legendary city of Bologna. Birthplace of the famous ragú alla Bolognese, you’ll eat well here. Choose a place for lunch before you get back on the road.

Pass through the Tuscan hills to Florence. Built on the shores of the Arno river, this city doesn’t just hold art and history, it overflows with it. Take an evening stroll to soak up the atmosphere – keeping an eye out for the elegant dome of Florence Cathedral.

Stay at the Grand Hotel Mediterraneo or similar in Florence.

    Included:
    • Breakfast at your accommodation
    • Orientation tour of Bologna

Average travel & exploration time: 6-7 hours

  • Day 4: Renaissance glory in Florence

Join a local guide for an in-depth tour of Florence. The birthplace of the Renaissance, this city was a centre of trade, finance and culture in medieval Europe. Explore its Roman origins, Middle Age conflicts and world-changing Renaissance at Piazza della Signoria, the Palazzo Vecchio, Ponte Vecchio, and more.

Explore chic shopping streets and the bar-packed Oltrarno district. You’ll also pass Giotto’s Campanile and step inside the iconic Duomo di Firenze, following your guide up to a balcony for panoramic views across terracotta rooftops.

After that introduction, take the afternoon to explore more of Florence. We recommend delving deeper into Renaissance art at the Uffizi Gallery or the Accademia Gallery – we can arrange a skip-the-line guided tour of either. Just say the word.

Stay another night at the Grand Hotel Mediterraneo or similar in Florence.

    Included:
    • Breakfast at your accommodation
    • Walking tour of Florence
    • Entry to the Duomo with private balcony visit

  • Day 5: All roads lead to Rome

The Eternal City awaits. But you’re not done with Tuscany yet – after winding south through grass-blanketed hills, you’ll approach the medieval hilltop village of Montalcino, with a lush wine estate situated just outside. Tour the vineyards, sample some world-class wines, then sit for a meal of local specialities.

Later, get back on the road and continue to Rome. Italy’s capital has it all, but don’t rush – you've got all of tomorrow to explore. Head across the Tiber river to the Trastevere district, where a maze of cobbled lanes conceals countless tiny piazzas and tempting trattorias.

Stay at the Hotel Montecarlo or similar in Rome.

    Included:
    • Breakfast at your accommodation
    • Wine tasting and lunch at a Tuscan vineyard

  • Day 6: Rome’s ancient heart

Step straight into ancient history this morning on a guided tour of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. The immense amphitheatre is where gladiators fought and 50,000 spectators roared. Close by, the Forum holds the ruins of ancient Rome’s political and social engine, including temples, basilicas and seats of government.

Finish up at Palatine Hill, where the city’s wealthy and powerful once lived. Covered with its own immense ruins, it offers mesmerising views of the Forum and Colosseum below.

Then, the afternoon is yours to explore. Step over the border into the world’s smallest country at Vatican City. Home to the Catholic Church, this tiny nation is also the proud protector of some of the world’s greatest artworks and artefacts.

Stay another night at the Hotel Montecarlo or similar in Rome.

  • Day 7: Arrivederci, Rome

Your Italian adventure draws to a close. If your flight’s not until later, don't rush. Rome deserves a proper goodbye. And if you’d rather stay a few more nights, we can make that happen.

Find one last local delicacy you haven't tried yet, order an espresso like a local, watch the city wake up one more time. Take a final stroll through Piazza Navona, then stand beneath the marble columns of the Pantheon. Climb the famous Spanish Steps, or toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain to make sure you’ll come back some day.

When it's time, make your way to the airport.

FAQs

Everything you need to know about this tour before you book

We recommend that you read carefully through the following information before booking this guided group tour in Italy. We’ve answered the most frequently asked questions here so you know what to expect.

On a guided small group tour of Italy, you’ll dive into spectacular scenery and local culture while we take care of all the details. We’ll arrange your local transportation, accommodation and daily excursions so all you have to do is sit back and soak it in.

You’ll be travelling with a knowledgeable local guide and a group of like-minded travellers. We’ll have your itinerary pre-planned and booked before you arrive, so you can land in Italy with complete peace of mind – no hassle, just the good stuff.

Before you go, we’ll send personalised information by email, including your itinerary and a detailed Italy Travel Guide. And while you’re on tour, you can always reach us on our 24/7 helpline if you need anything.

Your tour includes the expert service of an experienced local guide who’ll travel with your group around Italy. They’ll make sure everything runs smoothly and that you have the best possible experience.

As an Italy expert, they’re a brilliant resource for any questions you might have – whether it’s about the best gelato in town or the history behind that Renaissance masterpiece. Don’t be shy about asking them anything you’re curious about.

Due to the nature of this tour and the activities included, it’s not recommended for families with young children. That said, it is suitable for active children aged 12 years or older. If in doubt, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

To make sure you and your fellow travellers have a comfortable journey, we need to limit the size and amount of luggage in the bus.

Each guest can bring 1 suitcase or large bag that can be stored in the back of the minibus. The guidance size for the larger luggage is that it should not exceed 158 cm (62 in) when adding the length, width and height. It should not weigh more than 20 kg.

You can also bring one smaller item (like a small backpack) for daily essentials like camera, wallet, medications and so forth.

If you have more luggage, we ask that you please make arrangements to store it during the guided portion of the tour.

Please be advised that during parts of your trip, you will need to transport your own luggage between legs of your journey, so we recommend bringing a light suitcase on wheels.

If you have any questions about luggage your Nordic Visitor travel consultant will be able to assist you.

During your tour of the Alps, you’ll stay in accommodation hand-picked by our local travel experts. We’ve partnered with local businesses and selected hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses based on excellent ratings, comfort and personal experience.

You can view the detailed list of hotels for this trip under the accommodation tab.

Across the Alps region, you can choose from single and double rooms. Please also note that in the countries you’ll be visiting, room types are based on European standard sizes, which means they are smaller than in North America.

For example, a double bed often consists of 2 single beds pushed together, twin rooms are 2 separate single beds, and single rooms are often smaller than the standard double.

Because of the historic nature of many Italian buildings and sustainability regulations, not all hotels have in-room air conditioning. That said, most hotels provide fans to help keep you comfortable during warmer spells.

Your guided group tour will include a fair amount of walking for sightseeing. The best way to explore the towns and cities you’ll be visiting is on foot, so this tour is ideal for people who can walk between 3-5 kilometres (2-3 miles) a day.

You’ll also need to be able to carry your own luggage at accommodation and in and out of transport.

You’ll enjoy a daily breakfast buffet at your hotels throughout the tour. Lunch is also included at a winery during the guided portion of your trip, as shown in your itinerary. Drinks aren’t included with your lunch.

If you have any dietary requirements, just let your travel consultant know in advance.

Meals and drinks outside of the included breakfasts and lunch aren’t included and will be at your own expense during the trip. This means you’re free to sample all that Italy has to offer at your leisure.

You’ll skip the queues and step straight inside the Colosseum with a licensed English-speaking guide who knows the history intimately. They’ll walk you through the amphitheatre’s tiers and corridors, sharing all the details: how it was built, who filled it, and how the spectacles unfolded.

After the Colosseum, your guide will take you through the Roman Forum – the political and social heart of ancient Rome. Ruins of temples, basilicas and government buildings evoke an atmosphere of power. Then there’s Palatine Hill, where the wealthy once lived in homes overlooking the city.

You’ll have time to wander, take photos, and soak it all in at your own pace. This is a small group tour, so there’s space to ask questions and linger where you want to.

The tour runs in all weather, rain or shine. The areas you’ll visit have steep, uneven inclines, so if you have any mobility concerns, just let us know in advance. We’ll make sure the experience is as smooth as possible for you.

Some are, some aren’t. Each tour page lists what’s included in the package.

Some attractions come pre-booked. Others are recommendations – you decide if you’d like to visit. You might also see options to add as extras during booking. It’s your adventure, so choose what intrigues you most.

Absolutely. Many of your itinerary days are flexible, allowing you to add optional activities. These could be cultural experiences, outdoor adventures, and other things that make your trip richer. Of course, sometimes, most of your day could be spent travelling or exploring something specific, meaning there may not be time for extra experiences in every case.

You’ll be able to customise your trip by adding extra activities in the booking steps. Pick what speaks to you. Leave out what doesn’t.

Yes, for popular sites, you should pre-book tickets in advance. This way you can make sure you see the spots on your travel wish-list but also secure the ideal times for you. Your travel consultant will let you know the attractions where this is highly recommended.

In the larger cities and at popular attractions, yes you can expect people to speak English. That said, in smaller towns you might find people have a limited knowledge of the language. We recommend having translation apps available such as Google Translate.

Not at all. Italy’s restaurant scene is diverse, modern, and used to welcoming people from everywhere.

Breakfast is included at your accommodation each day, and your travel consultant will make sure there are options for everyone. Just let them know when you book your trip. They’ll also recommend lunch and dinner spots along your route where you can eat well.

Italy experiences warm and sometimes humid summers.

From June to August, temperatures typically range from 25–35 °C (77–95 °F), with occasional heatwaves. You might find the cities feel warmer because of urban heat. Due to these temperatures, thunderstorms can occur later in the afternoons, particularly near the lakes and mountains.

It’s good to note that not all hotels in Italy have air conditioning. Most do offer fans to try to keep you cool.

For milder weather, consider visiting during the shoulder season. May sees pleasant temperatures around 18–25 °C (64–77 °F) and blooming landscapes. Following summer, September remains warm (20–28°C / 68–82°F) but with fewer visitors. These months are ideal for sightseeing and enjoying al fresco dining without the peak summer heat.

As you should expect warm weather on a summer trip to Italy, you’ll want to make sure you pack accordingly. This way you can make the most of the cities, lakes and Italian countryside.

Here is a recommended packing list for your trip:

  • Comfortable walking shoes (and sandals)
  • Light, breathable summer clothing
  • Stylish outfit and shoes to go out in the cities like Milan
  • Small backpack for daily exploring
  • Light scarf or shawl for visiting churches
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and a sunhat
  • Swimsuit for lakes, beaches and pools
  • Reusable water bottle
  • And your camera of course!

The amount of spending money you need will depend on the standard of restaurants you decide to go to.

That said, we recommend budgeting between €25–€30 per person for each day’s lunch, or ₣20–30 in Switzerland.

Dinners at casual restaurants might cost between €30–€35, ₣25–35. Meanwhile at upscale restaurants, you can expect to pay €50–€70 or more, which would be ₣45-65. This does not include the cost of alcoholic beverages.

All transfers between your accommodation and departure points are included in the package. Departure points will be within easy walking distance of where you’re staying, and your guide will be with you every step of the way.

Just a heads up – you will need to carry your own luggage to the departure points.

There are limited laundry facilities in the countryside, though you’ll find laundrettes in the larger cities and towns. Some hotels do offer dry cleaning for an additional cost.

In Italy, tipping is not mandatory but welcomed. It is usually based on the quality of service. Locals often add around 10% or simply round up their bill.

Yes, you can customise this tour online. During the booking process, you can add extra nights to your itinerary as well as optional day trips, excursions and upgrades.

If you have something specific in mind, please let your travel consultant know at the time of booking. They'll see what they can do to accommodate you.

If the flights from your home arrive in a different city than where we start our tours, please get in touch with your travel consultant.

By booking with Nordic Visitor, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that there’s always someone there for you throughout your trip.

For support and advice during the day, you can call our office. And if anything unexpected happens outside working hours, you can reach us on our 24/7 helpline.

During your tour, there will always be a travel expert on call to handle any unforeseen situations, such as unusual weather or events.

If you’re arriving from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand, you won’t need a visa to visit Italy.

Visiting from another country? You can find the complete lists of countries whose nationals require visas to visit Italy on the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website.

Your passport needs to be valid for the entirety of your stay in Italy, and for at least 6 months after your departure date. It’s a good idea to check your passport expiry date early in case you need to renew it.

It’s best to book as soon as you can to secure your preferred travel dates. Once you have picked your tour, check the availability calendar to see which months are open for booking. Then, select the date you want and complete your booking.

Nordic Visitor offers 10–20% deposits so you can reserve your trip as early as it’s convenient for you. The remaining balance is due 30 days before you travel.

Many tours are also open for the following year if you like to plan well ahead. And if you have any questions or need advice, you can always contact us

After booking your tour package online, you will be contacted within 2 business days by your own dedicated travel consultant. They will be your point of contact for all your travel needs before, during and even after your trip.

We aim to complete bookings within a few weeks. During this time we take care of booking your accommodation, activities, and transport, confirming all parts of your journey. Once this is done, your travel consultant will provide you with all the details of your trip.

When we get back to you might depend slightly on how far ahead you’ve booked your travels and other tours running at the time.

No need! Nordic Visitor is already working on offsetting the estimated carbon footprint of your package. We’ve partnered with an environmental fund in Iceland to carbon offset all our tours.

Carbon offsetting your international flights is not included, but we highly recommend you look into possibilities with your airline or directly through a local environment fund.

After you have booked your tour, it will only take a few days to confirm its availability. But it may take a few weeks to create your itinerary and book everything. Once your trip details are finalised, we’ll send you e-copies of your travel documents.

Upon arrival in Italy, you’ll receive a welcome package with hard copies of your itinerary, accommodation and tour vouchers, the Nordic Visitor Italy Travel Guide and more.

So when do you check in? And what can you expect upon landing in Italy?

After picking up your luggage, make your way to your accommodation. Italian cities are well connected to their respective airports.  Simply hop on public transport, catch a taxi or book an optional private transfer.

Check-in times vary between hotels and guesthouses, but it normally starts around 3 PM. You are welcome to request an early check-in for an additional fee. Although this isn’t always available, you’ll be able to store your luggage at the hotel if you have to wait. Please contact your travel consultant well in advance of your arrival if you’d like an early check-in.

When you depart may depend on the time of your return flight. Check out early if you’re heading to the airport for a morning flight. On the other hand, if you’re flying home later in the day, you might like to enjoy a leisurely day or visit one more attraction.

You will need to check out from your room, but will be able to store your luggage at the hotel reception. Simply return later to collect your bags before catching your transfer to the airport.

All bookings are billed in Euros (EUR), the local currency of Italy.

Prices displayed in other currencies are indicative only and based on the daily exchange rate. This means conversions from EUR to other currencies will fluctuate from day to day.
