Akershus Fortress

A blast from the medieval past in the heart of Oslo

Standing guard over Oslo’s harbour, Akershus Fortress is a medieval castle and stronghold with sweeping views across the fjord. Its stone walls and towers hold stories of Norway’s long and often turbulent history, while the surrounding grounds are open to explore.

The fortress dates to the late 13th century, built to protect Oslo from attack. Over the centuries it has served as a royal residence, military base, and prison. Kings were crowned and buried here, and the site has witnessed everything from medieval battles to World War II occupation.

Today you can wander through the castle halls, chapels and dungeons, or visit the museums on site, including the Armed Forces Museum and the Resistance Museum. The royal mausoleum is home to the tombs of several Norwegian monarchs, making it a place that still holds cultural significance to this day.
