KODE Art Museums of Bergen

The KODE Art Museums stretch along Bergen’s Lille Lungegård lake, forming one of the largest art and design collections in the Nordics. Between 4 museums and several composer’s homes, they showcase an incredible collection of painting, sculpture, design and music exhibitions.

 

KODE holds works ranging from Renaissance art to cutting-edge contemporary exhibitions. Among the highlights are Norway’s most extensive collection of Edvard Munch paintings outside of Oslo, alongside European masters such as Picasso, Klee and Miró. Decorative art, furniture and craft also feature strongly, giving a broad view of creativity across the centuries.

 

The museum buildings each have their own character. KODE 1 focuses on decorative art and design, KODE 2 on temporary exhibitions, KODE 3 on historical collections, and KODE 4 on modern art. In addition, the homes of composers such as Edvard Grieg, Harald Sæverud and Ole Bull are part of the museum, set in scenic surroundings outside the city.

 

A visit can be as short or as long as you wish. You might spend an hour admiring Munch’s haunting canvases, or half a day exploring furniture, textiles and modern Norwegian design.
