Longyearbyen

With just 2,500 inhabitants, Longyearbyen is Svalbard's largest settlement and one of the world’s northernmost towns.

It’s situated on the west coast of Spitsbergen, the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago.

As the region’s administrative centre, Longyearbyen is home just about everything from modern society. You’ll find a hospital, university, sports centre, library, cultural centre, cinema, bank, airport, shops, restaurants and hotels here.

Due to its location far north of the Arctic Circle, this region experiences the polar night from late October to mid-February. It also gets the polar day (also called midnight sun) from mid-April to late August.
