Explore this modern centre of art, design and architecture

The National Museum of Norway sits on Oslo’s waterfront at Vestbanen, near the City Hall and harbour. Opened in 2022, it is Scandinavia’s largest art museum, bringing together collections that were once spread across several smaller museums, including the former National Gallery.

Inside, you’ll find more than 120,000 works covering art, design, and architecture. Highlights include Edvard Munch’s The Scream, Norwegian and European masterpieces, furniture, and decorative arts showing how style and design have evolved over the centuries. Temporary exhibitions in the Light Hall often feature international artists.

You can also enjoy the rooftop terrace with wide views of Oslofjord and the city. Most people spend 2–4 hours exploring the collection, but if you like to linger over paintings or join a guided tour, you can easily spend even more time here.
