Itinerary

A day-by-day plan to guide your journey.

  • Day 1: Welcome to Oslo

Touch down, grab your bags and head into the city centre. Once you’re checked in at your hotel, hit the town.

First head to the Vigeland Sculpture Park. Artworks line the pathways, benches dot the grass. The Oslo City Hall, Opera House, Royal Palace and Akershus Fortress are also well worth a visit. And don’t miss Karl Johans Gate. This thoroughfare is the city’s main artery.

Before dinner, you’ll meet your tour leader and fellow travellers for a welcome drink. This is when you’ll get your Nordic Visitor welcome pack, too. And when you’re hungry, head to Aker Brygge.

Spend the night at the Thon Hotel Opera or similar.

    Included:
    • Welcome drink and group information meeting with your tour leader

  • Day 2: Norway in a Nutshell® & Flåm

Today our Norway in a Nutshell by Fjord Tours journey begins by train. We’ll pass Gol and Geilo as landscapes shift from valleys to peaks.

At Myrdal, we'll switch to the Flåm Railway for a jaw-dropping descent through dramatic terrain. Waterfalls cascade beside the tracks. The gradient defies belief.

Arriving in Flåm, we'll board a bus to Stegastein viewpoint. The road coils upward through 13 hairpin bends. The viewing platform juts 30 metres out from the mountainside – steel and wood suspended over nothing.

The Railway Museum sits beside Flåm station if you're curious about how they built such an audacious railway line.

Spend the night at the Fretheim Hotel or similar.

    Included:
    • Breakfast at your accommodation
    • Bergensbanen from Oslo to Myrdal
    • Flåmsbana railway from Myrdal to Flåm
    • Direct luggage transfer from Oslo to Bergen
    • Stegastein Viewpoint tour
    • Dinner at your accommodation

Estimated time with your guide: 6–7 hours (including travel time)

  • Day 3: Spellbinding Cruise & Railway Journey

You're free to explore Flåm this morning before boarding a cruise along Aurlandsfjord and into Nærøyfjord – the world's narrowest fjord. This is Sognefjord's most beautiful and dramatic arm.

Tall mountains rise steeply. Waterfalls plunge from impossible heights. Small farms cling to slopes that seem too steep for anything to survive.

At Gudvangen pier, we’ll board a coach to Voss, before switching to a train for the final stretch into Bergen, arriving in the evening.

Spend the night at the Thon Hotel Orion or similar.

    Included:
    • Breakfast at your accommodation
    • Fjord cruise from Flåm to Gudvangen
    • Bus transfer from Gudvangen to Voss
    • Train from Voss to Bergen

Estimated time with your guide: 5–6 hours (including train travel)

  • Day 4: Medieval Bryggen & Panoramic Views

Discover Bergen’s beauty and small-town charm on a guided walking tour this morning. Colourful buildings hide around every corner. Trading history whispers from every brick in the wall. Bryggen bustles with local life.

We’ll ride the funicular up Mount Fløyen. Bergen spreads out below – rooftops, waterways, and mountains visible from all angles. Bring your camera – you’ll need it.

The rest of the afternoon is yours to do with as you wish. Wander the fish market, duck into the Maritime Museum, or simply sit with coffee watching the city move around you.

Spend another night at the Thon Hotel Orion or similar.

    Included:
    • Breakfast at your accommodation
    • Guided walking tour of Bergen (2.5 hours)
    • Fløibanen funicular round-trip tickets

Estimated time with your guide: 4–5 hours

  • Day 5: Chase the northern lights in Tromsø

We’re flying north today, into the snowy Arctic Circle, to Tromsø. Once you’ve checked in at the hotel, head out to explore the city.

Nicknamed the "Capital of Northern Norway", it’s a magical place. The centre buzzes with restaurants serving Arctic specialities. Sample some. You won’t get anything like it back home.

In the evening, we'll board a northern lights* cruise. The boat sails away from Tromsø's bright lights to hunt for the aurora at sea. Dinner’s served onboard under the inky black sky. Keep your eyes peeled for that first green shimmer to appear.

Spend the night at the Thon Hotel Tromsø or similar.

    Included:
    • Breakfast at your accommodation
    • Flight from Bergen to Tromsø
    • Airport transfer to Bergen Airport
    • Airport transfer from Tromsø Airport
    • Northern Lights Dinner Cruise

Estimated time with your guide: 7-8 hours (including travel)
Estimated travel duration: 4 hours total including flight and transfers.

    * Please note that the northern lights are a natural phenomenon and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

  • Day 6: Meeting the local wildlife

Wake early and fuel up – this morning we’ll be coursing through the snowy landscape on reindeer-pulled sleds. Once the ride is over, you’ll also get to feed the friendly herd. Sámi guides lead the excursion, sharing stories about their culture as you go.

Back in town, how you spend the rest of your day is up to you. Visit the iconic Artic cathedral. Explore Tromsø some more. Just make sure to enjoy an early dinner.

Once darkness has drawn in, we’ll head out on another northern lights* tour – this time by bus.

Spend another night at the Thon Hotel Tromsø or similar.

    Included:
    • Breakfast at your accommodation
    • Reindeer Sledding & Sami Culture experience
    • Northern Lights bus tour

  • Day 7: Departure from the north

Your week-long Norwegian adventure comes to an end today. You’ve seen frozen fjords. Historic cities. Snowcapped mountaintops. And (if you’ve been lucky) the northern lights.

If you’ve got time before your flight, enjoy some more of Tromsø. Stroll the charming streets or have one last meal at a local café.

When it’s time to go, hop on the Flybussen coach or take a taxi back to the airport.

We’ve answered the most frequently asked questions here so you know what to expect. You’ll also find more practical advice and attraction recommendations in our online Norway Travel Guide.

On this tour, you’ll get to experience both independent travel and exciting excursions led by local guides to see the best of the Norwegian Arctic. All with the support and 24/7 helpline of Nordic Visitor.

You’ll be able to explore the vibrant “capital of Northern Norway”, Tromsø, at your leisure.

In between your own exploration, you’ll join some thrilling guided excursions to experience the variety of Arctic life. You’ll always be led by a local, knowledgeable guide, and all the details of your adventures will be included in your itinerary.

Your tour package will include the professional service of an experienced tour leader. They will travel with your group around Norway and join you on all guided tours, transfers and activities on the itinerary.

The tour leader will make sure everything runs smoothly and help you have the best possible experience. As an expert on Norway, they’ll be a valuable resource for any questions you might have. Feel free to ask them anything you might be curious about.

Due to the nature of this tour and the activities included, it’s not recommended for families with young children. That said, it is suitable for active children aged 12 years or older. If in doubt, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

During the self-guided portion of your tour, transfers between your accommodation and train stations or cruise ports are not included. Usually, your accommodation will be within short walking distance. You could also get a taxi from your hotel if you prefer.

As you’ll be travelling as part of a guided group tour, your itinerary for this portion of your trip is set. But you can still customise other parts of your package.

For example, you could add extra nights in the city before or after the guided tour. Ask your personal travel consultant about adding extra nights or services.

If you’re looking to extend your Nordic adventure, you could add visits to Iceland, Scotland and/or Greenland to the beginning or end of your itinerary. Contact us for more details about customising your trip.

This package includes a domestic flight in Norway between Bergen and Tromsø. Usually, there are direct flights several times a day but, in some cases, flights might connect via Oslo.

Flights departing from Bergen are often in the early morning. This means that you might need to check in at the airport from 7 AM.

Your travel consultant will book the best option for your travel dates, dependent on availability. Flight times will be confirmed when we book your travel arrangements.

This tour includes the famous Norway in a Nutshell tour from Oslo to Bergen. This is one of Norway’s most iconic journeys. You’ll travel by train, bus and ferry, seeing beautiful landscapes of steep mountains, frosty waterfalls, shimmering fjords, charming villages and scenic coastline.

The first leg of the journey is from Oslo to Flåm. Then you'll be travelling from Flåm to Bergen. The duration of both days will be around 6 hours.

The connections will be announced and clearly explained in your travel documents. You will receive a ticket with all the information about transfer points and timings with your final travel documents.

You can book an optional luggage transfer for the journey. If you do this, you’ll want a backpack for your daily essentials and one-night stay. Your luggage will be waiting for you at your destination.

If you do not book a luggage transfer, you will have to carry your bags between the train, boat and bus. All connections will be within easy reach and there will be storage available for your luggage during each leg of the journey.

On your Norway tour, you’ll stay in accommodation that’s been hand-picked by our travel experts. We’ve partnered with local businesses and selected hotels and guesthouses based on excellent ratings, comfort and our personal experience.

You can view the detailed list of hotels for this trip under the accommodation tab.

You will also be able to choose between single and double rooms. Please note that in Norway room types are based on European standard sizes, which means they are smaller than in North America.

For example, a double room often consists of a double bed or 2 single beds pushed together. Twin rooms are 2 separate single beds. Single rooms are often smaller than the standard double.

Your guided group tour will include a fair amount of walking for sightseeing. The best way to explore the towns and cities you’ll be visiting is on foot, so this tour is ideal for people who can walk between 3-5 kilometres (2-3 miles) a day.

You’ll also need to be able to carry your own luggage at accommodation and in and out of transport.

At your booked hotels and cruises, you’ll enjoy a daily breakfast buffet for the duration of this tour.

You’ll also have some dinners included throughout the guided portion of this tour, as stated in your itinerary. They will consist of either a set 2 or 3-course menu, or a dinner buffet with fresh local ingredients.

Drinks are not included with your dinners.

Please notify your travel consultant in advance of any dietary restrictions. Other meals and drinks are not included and will be at your own expense during the trip.

When you travel with Nordic Visitor, breakfast at your Norway accommodation is always included.  For the rest of your meals, the amount of spending money you need will depend on the standard of restaurants you decide to go to.

That said, we recommend budgeting between 200–400 NOK for lunch per person, each day. Dinners at casual restaurants might cost between 400–700 NOK for a main course. Meanwhile, at upscale restaurants, you can expect to pay 700–1,500 NOK, or more. This does not include the cost of alcoholic beverages.

Because of its northerly location close to and inside the Arctic Circle, Norway has limited daylight in winter.

In the south, you can expect more daylight than in the north. For example, in Tromsø, you’ll have less than 7 hours of daylight from late October. Then from late November to mid-January, the sun never rises. This is called the “polar night”.

In Oslo and Bergen, you’ll get 5–10 hours of daylight across the winter.

The beauty of these extended hours of darkness in Norway is that you’ll have a better chance of seeing the northern lights.

Find out what the daylight hours will be during the month of your visit in this guide to time and daylight in Norway.

The winter climate in Norway is generally cold, but the weather will vary greatly depending on where you visit.

From November, the temperatures fall and around the country you can expect averages between 1–5°C (34–41°F). This is also the time of year where snow starts falling and you’ll be able to admire the white-topped mountains.

For the rest of the winter, December until March, you’ll probably experience temperatures below freezing, around 0 to -7°C (31–19°F). This means you should come prepared with warm, insulated clothes and outer layers.

Read Norway weather conditions for more information on the local climate.

Please note that sightseeing is dependent on weather and road conditions. Your itinerary might need to be altered if these conditions are not favourable during your visit.

During Norway’s winter season, you can expect temperatures below freezing. For that reason, you’ll want to pack and dress with plenty of layers to keep yourself warm and dry.

Here is an essential winter packing list for your trip to Norway:

  • Insulated and waterproof jacket
  • Cosy wool or fleece jumpers
  • Snow or waterproof trousers depending on your destination
  • Warm gloves, hat and scarf
  • Insulated boots
  • A few pairs of thermal socks
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Electronic gear such as smartphone, external powerpack, and travel adapters
  • and don’t forget your camera!

If you’re heading north and plan on taking part in winter excursions, you could also bring glove liners and heat packs for extra warmth.

Some day tour operators will provide you with thermal suits for your comfort. To find out if equipment is provided check the details of each activity before you leave for Norway, or get in touch with your personal travel consultant.

For more information, check out this Norway packing list.

In most major Norwegian cities and towns you will be able to find coin-operated launderettes, with self-service facilities, and dry cleaners. Most hotels on your trip will also offer a laundry or dry cleaning service for an additional cost.

It’s best to book as soon as you can to secure your preferred travel dates. Once you have picked your tour, check the availability calendar to see which months are open for booking. Then, select the date you want and complete your booking.

We recommend waiting for a confirmation from your travel consultant to ensure your travel dates are available. You’ll then be able to purchase your flights with confidence.
