Historic and colourful neighbourhood

This is the area of Trondheim you’re most likely to recognise from postcards and travel photos. On the east side of the city is Bakklandet, a charming quarter where you’ll find an iconic row of brightly coloured old wooden houses.

First inhabited in the 1600s, Bakklandet began as a working-class district, and its roots are still proudly visible in the traditional wooden houses and narrow streets. Today, it combines this heritage with boutique shops, artisan galleries and cosy cafés.

From the city centre, the best way to access this colourful area of Trondheim is by walking over the Old City Bridge (“Gamle Bybro”), also known as the “Gate of Happiness” (“Lykkens Portal”). Or if you cycle here instead, the neighbourhood is also home to the world’s first bicycle lift, “trampe”, to help you up the steep Brubakken hill.
