The one street you won't want to miss in Oslo

A leisurely stroll down Karl Johans Gate, Oslo’s main thoroughfare, is a must for anyone wanting to experience city life like a local.  This popular avenue stretches from Oslo Central Station on the eastern end to the Royal Palace on the western end.

The cobbled pedestrian section of the street offers numerous shops, restaurants and cafés as well as street musicians and artists. You’ll find the grand parliament building, Stortinget, at the end of this colourful stretch. Take a tour to discover more about this beautiful and historic 19th-century building.

Soon after is the “green belt” of the street with trees, grassy areas, ponds and fountains. In winter, the trees are illuminated and the fountain area is transformed into an outdoor ice-skating rink. For a truly Nordic experience, grab some skates from the connecting restaurant and enjoy Oslo on ice!

Further along is the National Theatre, one of Norway's largest and most prominent venues for the performing arts. This beautiful 19th-century baroque-style building also houses impressive artworks by renowned Norwegian artists.

Across the street, adjacent to Hotel Continental, is the Theatre Café restaurant (Teatercaféen). Traditionally frequented by the more eccentric and famous members of Oslo’s arts community, the café boasts a lively atmosphere with caricatures of legendary artists, authors and actors. There’s even a string quartet in the evenings.
