Ideal spot to take in views of Bergen
In the heart of Bergen, you’ll find the Fløibanen Funicular, a much-loved ride that carries you from the city centre up Mount Fløyen. The journey takes only a few minutes, but the views unfold quickly, with red-roofed houses, the harbour and 7 surrounding mountains stretching into the distance.
Opened in 1918, the funicular has long been a favourite for locals as well as visitors. Originally built to make the steep hillside accessible to residents, it is now one of Bergen’s best attractions. There’s even a café so you can sit back and enjoy a drink as you take in the views.
At the top, step out to sweeping panoramas of Bergen and the fjords beyond. Clear days reveal layers of mountains fading into the horizon, while evenings bring the twinkle of city lights. There are easy walking trails here, ranging from short loops through the pine forest to longer hikes deeper into the hills.
The ride takes only about 8 minutes each way, with several departures daily. Tickets can be purchased at the station.
