Salt mines, serene lakes and idyllic towns

Known as Austria’s lake district, Salzkammergut is a region of dramatic natural beauty. Like much of the Austrian Alps, it is also steeped in history and charm, so don’t miss your chance to see it.

Salzkammergut translates to “estate of the salt chamber”, which echoes the significant salt mining history of the area. Picture cute villages nestled in lush valleys surrounded by Alpine ranges. The landscape here is dotted with verdant woodlands, serene lakes and historic towns.

Hallstatt is arguably the most famous and scenic spot to visit in Salzkammergut. It is an idyllic lakeside town with iconic Alpine wooden houses. In fact, the Hallstatt-Dachstein area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its cultural landscape and legacy. The world’s oldest salt mine is also located nearby.

Other highlights of this region include the Dachstein caves, the Gustav Klimt trail, Mozarthaus and palaces such as Ort and Weyer.

You could also visit the spa town of Bad Ischl, where you’ll find the Lehár Villa. Or for something more unusual, pop by K-Hof to learn about the history of the area and see its exhibit of sanitary objects.
