The Jostedal Glacier (“Jostedalsbreen”) is mainland Europe’s largest glacier. It covers nearly 487 square kilometres (188 square miles) and lies between deep valleys and meandering fjords in Vestland county, in the Jostedalsbreen National Park. Its shimmering ice contrasts sharply with the surrounding green valleys, creating one of Norway’s most dramatic landscapes.

Formed thousands of years ago, the glacier is an impressive reminder of the last Ice Age. Over centuries, it has shaped the valleys, waterfalls and rivers distinctive of the area. Several branches of solid ice extend down nearby valleys, giving travellers a rare opportunity to experience the wonder of this glacier up close.
