Historic 12th-century church

The Church of Our Lady (“Vår Frue Church”) stands in Trondheim’s city centre, near the Nidelva river and Bakklandet. Its white stone façade and elegant spire make it a prominent landmark.

Built in the 12th century, the church has been rebuilt several times after fires. It is Trondheim’s oldest surviving stone church and has long been a central place of worship.

Inside, you’ll find gothic arches, a finely carved wooden altarpiece, and colourful stained-glass windows. Fascinating details include 800-year-old medieval runes etched into the walls, a 17th-century pulpit, and a baptismal font that has been used for centuries. Look out for historic plaques commemorating local bishops and benefactors for a glimpse into the community’s past.
