Fortified Riviera port with Picasso ties

Wedged between Nice and Cannes, this sun-warmed port town has aged well since the ancient Greeks first set anchor here. Taking an evening wander through the streets of Antibes, you’ll agree they chose the right spot.

The Marché Provençal should be your first stop. Every morning (except Monday), the covered market fills with local cheese, lavender, tapenade, and socca – the crisp chickpea pancake popular along the Riviera.

From there, lose an hour in the Vieil Antibes. The lanes are narrow, the shutters are faded, and the café terraces trap the sunlight all afternoon. Port Vauban – one of the largest yacht harbours in Europe – lies just outside.

Walk the coastal path and you’ll trace the same clifftop edge that Picasso once called home. He lived and painted here in 1946 – Château Grimaldi, now the Picasso Museum, holds over 20 works he left behind when he moved on.
