Norway train and rail tours

Climb aboard. These Norway train tours carry you from Oslo to Bergen, north to Trondheim and Ålesund, and through the fjords and mountains in between. Most combine the rails with a fjord or coastal cruise, so you travel by water too. With the hotels booked and the route planned, the only thing left is to watch it roll past.

Local experts, local insights

We've been crafting unforgettable European escapes since 2002. Our Norway experts know which trainline gets the best fjord view, and which little stop is worth an extra night. Get ready to travel on routes they've ridden and recommendations they've earned.

Great reviews

Year after year, Tripadvisor awards us its Certificate of Excellence. We have thousands of 5-star reviews. Even better, 97% of our travellers would recommend us to people they care about. That's what matters most.

Full financial protection

We follow European Union Package Travel regulations, which means your money’s safe, no matter what. If the unlikely happens and we face insolvency, you get a full refund. It's not an add-on. Just standard protection you can count on.

24/7 support

Travel with peace of mind knowing we're only a call away. If something unexpected comes up, our 24/7 support connects you with one of our travel experts. We'll rebook activities, arrange alternatives, or sort whatever you need to keep your trip running smoothly.

Handpicked hotels

We've checked into every hotel on your trip ourselves, so you don't have to gamble on where you rest your head. Expect comfortable rooms, a warm welcome, and a good night's sleep before the next day on the rails. Then breakfast, and off you go again.

Flexible itineraries

You'll always get a tour shaped by our travel experts, packed with the rail journeys and fjords you came for. But you can make it yours. Extra nights in Bergen? Add them. Fjord kayaking or a Bergen food walk? Choose those too. A higher hotel level? Just say so. It's your trip.

Extensive personal planning by Irja over four years helped us refine and have a wonderful trip. The connections were seamless. The accommodations were almost always first rate.

We absolutely loved Norway! Our daily activities were within our ability and we enjoyed the continuous scenic beauty. Everywhere we went we saw new sights that amazed us. The accomodatiions were comfortable and centrally located. We were worried about taking the train in from Oslo airport but it was easy, comfortable and the most economical mode of travel for us. We lucked out on the weather, only one really rainy day and that was a day we were mostly traveling on the boat. Irja was patient with us regardiing our questions and once we had our itinerary cleared up, we were able to follow the daily guide and enjoy this amazing trip.

Moments for your Norwegian wish list

Some of Norway’s best views arrive at 40 km/h, framed by a carriage window. Here are the rail journeys and fjord stops we’d nudge you towards first…

  • Ride the Flåm Railway, one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world
  • Climb the Bergen Railway to Finse, the highest point on the line
  • Trace Raumabanen past Kylling Bridge and the plunging Vermafossen falls
  • Sail into the Nærøyfjord, a narrow, UNESCO-listed branch of Sognefjord
  • Wander Bryggen, Bergen’s weathered old wharf of wooden Hanseatic houses
  • Watch the Kjosfossen waterfall crash down beside the railway tracks
  • Glide up the Fløibanen funicular for the view over Bergen
  • Chase the northern lights on winter trips north of the Arctic Circle
  • Step onto the Stegastein viewpoint, hung high above the Aurlandsfjord

Your questions about
Norway train trips, answered

New to Norway, or just to travelling it by rail? Our Norway travel guide is a good place to start, with the lowdown on weather, packing and getting around.

One thing worth knowing right away: your payments are fully protected when you book with us. That’s our Book With Confidence promise. Our booking terms and FAQs have more details if you want to dig a little deeper.

Because the train takes you straight through the best of Norway. Lines like the Bergen Railway and the Flåm Railway climb over high plateaus and twist down to the fjords, past waterfalls you’d never reach by road.

Settle in by the window and watch it unfold. No driving, no parking, no map to wrestle with.

Yes, and it’s one of the best ways to do it. Every one of our Norwegian train tours pairs the rails with a fjord or coastal cruise, so you see the country from the water as well as from the window.

If that’s the trip you’re after, our Norway train and cruise tours lay out the options.

Norway’s railways serve up view after view, but a few journeys stand out:

• The Flåm Railway, the steep, twisting line down to the fjord, is one of the most exceptional train journeys in the world
• The Bergen Railway crosses the high plateau between Oslo and Bergen
Raumabanen, running past Kylling Bridge and the Vermafossen falls towards Åndalsnes
• The Dovre Railway line, heading north from Oslo towards Trondheim

The most popular trip of all weaves the Bergen Railway, the Flåm Railway and a fjord cruise into one classic Oslo–Bergen route. You’ll also find versions built around Sognefjord and Geirangerfjord, both of which still ride the Flåm Railway.

In Norway, the railways link lots of the country’s greatest hits, so you’ll never be short of places to stop. A few worth building in time for:

Bergen, with its wooden wharf and fjord tours on the doorstep
Flåm, tucked at the end of the Aurlandsfjord
Oslo, for its museums, harbour and waterfront Opera House
Voss, an easy stop on the Bergen line between the city and the fjords
Trondheim, at the northern end of the Dovre line and home to Nidaros Cathedral
Åndalsnes, where the Raumabanen line ends among the Romsdalen peaks

For more ideas, our guide to Norway’s best spots is a good read.

Whenever suits you – our train and cruise tours run all year. Each season changes the view completely.

Summer (June to August) brings long, light evenings, green valleys and easy fjord cruising, with plenty of ideas in our Norway in summer guide. Winter (November to April) trades them for snow, frozen waterfalls and, far enough north, the northern lights.

Everything you need for the rail-and-fjord journey itself:

• Handpicked hotels at your chosen comfort level, with daily breakfast
• All the rail travel and fjord or coastal cruises are built into your route
• A detailed personal itinerary with expert tips
• 24/7 support throughout your trip

What’s not included? International flights, lunches and dinners, and travel insurance. We sort all the rest, so you get to enjoy the ride. Inclusions vary a little from trip to trip, so check the “what’s included” tab on any tour that catches your eye for the full rundown.

Yes. Our train tours run with flexible departures throughout the year, so you can pick the date that works for you. Check the availability calendar on any tour you like to see live start dates, then let us know when you’d like to travel, and we’ll build the trip around it.

Yes! There’s a ton of room to make your trip your own.

You can tailor a lot of it online! Popular tweaks include adding an extra night in Oslo or Bergen, upgrading your hotels, or slotting in optional activities along the way. For instance, things like a fjord safari by RIB boat, the Stegastein viewpoint, or a guided food walk around Bergen.

Prefer a hand? Tell your travel expert what you’re after, and they’ll shape the route before you book. Once you’re travelling, the pace of each day is yours.

Layers, always. Norway’s weather can swing from sunshine to drizzle in a single afternoon, so pack for a bit of everything:

• A waterproof, windproof jacket
• Warm mid-layers, like a fleece or insulated jacket
• Comfortable, sturdy shoes for cobbles and station platforms
• A small daypack for fjord cruises and day trips
• A reusable water bottle
• Sunglasses and a light hat for bright days out on deck

Travelling in winter? Add thermal base layers, a warm hat, gloves and insulated boots, especially within the Arctic Circle.

A word on luggage: wheeled suitcases or soft-sided bags are easiest to manoeuvre through stations and on and off trains. Norwegian trains have overhead racks for smaller bags and larger storage areas at the carriage ends for bigger cases. Pack a day bag for the things you’ll want within reach on the journey.

For more tips, our Norway packing guide has the full rundown.
