Your questions about travelling solo in Italy, answered
Planning a trip always throws up plenty of good questions – and we’re glad you’re asking them. Read on for answers to the ones we hear most often. You can also check out our Italy travel guide for more local advice and practical tips.
Here’s some peace of mind upfront: when you choose us, you can Book With Confidence, knowing your payments are protected. Curious about the details? You’ll find them in our booking terms and FAQs.
1. Is Italy a good destination for solo travellers?
Absolutely. Italy’s cities are walkable, well-connected, and full of the kind of café culture that’s tailor-made for solo enjoyment. A table for one at a trattoria is completely normal here. Nobody looks twice. Whether you’re nursing an espresso at a Roman bar or people-watching in a Venetian campo, you’ll settle into solo travel faster than you’d expect.
Solo travel in Italy has grown significantly in recent years, and the infrastructure supports it well – reliable rail links, clear road signage, good English in tourist areas, and a genuine warmth towards visitors travelling independently.
As with anywhere, it pays to be aware of your surroundings in busy city centres, particularly around major tourist landmarks where pickpockets can operate. Our Italy-based consultants know these destinations inside out and can share practical tips on everything from where to stay to which neighbourhoods to base yourself in.
2. When is the best time to visit Italy?
You can visit Italy with Nordic Visitor between April and October. The best time to go depends on the kind of experience you’re after. That said, April, May and September are the sweet spots. Expect warm, long days, and fewer visitors than in the peak summer months.
July and August are the most popular times to travel, particularly in Rome, Venice, and the Amalfi Coast. If you’re visiting in August, it’s worth knowing that Ferragosto (Italy’s national holiday) falls mid-month – most attractions stay open, but it’s worth checking ahead.
October is exceptional for wine lovers, especially around Lake Garda, where Bardolino’s annual wine festival brings music, food and fireworks to the lakeside.

3. What are the different tour options for a solo trip to Italy?
We offer a few different ways to explore Italy as a solo traveller:
Self-drive: You’re in the driving seat – literally. We book the car and the hotels and pre-plan the route. You go at your own pace, stop when something catches your eye, and linger as long as you like. Perfect for travellers who want complete freedom.
Guided small group: You join a small group of like-minded travellers (maximum 16) with an expert local guide leading the way. Social connection is built in, and every logistical detail is taken care of. Ideal if you’d rather not drive or simply want some company.
Multi-country train trip: We book the rail tickets and the accommodation, leaving you free to sit back and watch Italy and its Alpine neighbours unfold outside the window. No driving, no navigation, just extraordinary scenery and a beautiful way to uncover Northern Italy.
Not sure which suits you best? Get in touch, and our Italy experts will help you decide.
4. Do I have to pay a single supplement on a solo Italy tour?
Yes, a single supplement applies to solo room bookings, as hotels price rooms per room rather than per person. Your travel consultant will confirm the exact supplement for your chosen tour and dates during the booking process.
5. Can I customise my Italy tour?
Absolutely. Every tour in our range can be tailored by adding extra nights or optional activities.
For instance, you could extend your stay in cities like Rome, Florence, or Venice – so you can linger without feeling rushed. Or build in optional experiences, such as cooking classes, wine tastings at Tuscan vineyards, and skip-the-line museum tours.
A guided day trip to Cinque Terre from Florence is another favourite, and we can also arrange airport transfers to make your arrival seamless.
Browse the optional extras when you’re booking online, or ask your travel expert for recommendations.
6. How do small group tours work for solo travellers?
You join a small group of up to 16 travellers led by a knowledgeable local guide.
The group format works particularly well for solo travellers because connections happen naturally. You’re on the minibus together, exploring cities together, sharing meals. By Day 2, most people know each other’s names. By the end of the week, some of those connections last a lot longer.
Accommodation, breakfast, guided walking tours, and activities like a gondola ride in Venice, wine tasting and lunch at a Tuscan vineyard, and a guided Colosseum tour in Rome are included.

7. What do I need to know about driving in Italy?
Italy is a great place for a road trip. The autostradas are well-maintained, and the regional roads through Tuscany and Umbria are enjoyable to drive.
A few things worth knowing before you set off:
- ZTL zones (Zona a Traffico Limitato): Many historic city centres have restricted traffic zones. You won’t need to drive into the city centres themselves – your accommodation will be chosen to keep you out of ZTL trouble, and your itinerary notes where to park. Your travel consultant can advise you on this before you travel.
- Tolls: Some Italian autostradas have toll booths, where you’ll be charged a modest fee.
- The Amalfi Coast: Extraordinarily beautiful, but also winding and narrow in places. Try timing your journey to avoid the day-tripper traffic.
- Fuel: Widely available with self-service pumps available at most petrol stations.

8. What support do I get during my solo trip to Italy?
During your trip, our 24/7 helpline means there’s always someone to contact if anything comes up – an unexpected issue with the rental car, a question about your accommodation, anything at all. You won’t need it often. But it’s there.
And before you set off, your Rome-based consultant prepares a personalised pack with your day-by-day itinerary, a hand-marked route map, and the Nordic Visitor Italy travel guide. You’ll get online copies of the documents you need before you travel, and paper versions of everything will be waiting for you at your first hotel.
9. How should I prepare for a solo trip to Italy?
Start with the practical: check your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates, and ensure you have travel insurance that covers you for the activities you’ve got planned.
For self-drive tours, make sure your driving licence is current and check whether you’ll need an International Driving Permit – your consultant can advise based on where your licence was issued.
A few things that go a long way in Italy: a basic grasp of Italian pleasantries (locals appreciate the effort enormously), a willingness to eat at local times (lunch around 1 PM, dinner rarely before 8 PM), and comfortable walking shoes.
And read our Italy packing guide for tips on what to bring with you.
10. What’s the food and drink like on a solo Italy trip?
Honestly? It’s one of the best parts.
As well as just eating it, we also recommend embracing the local culture around food. Espresso is always taken standing at the bar. Lunch is a ritual worth slowing down for. A glass of local wine with dinner – in a trattoria with paper tablecloths and no menu in English – is one of life’s great pleasures.
What to eat and where depends entirely on where you are. Carbonara in Rome. Cicchetti in Venice. Brunello in Montalcino. Traditional pizza in Naples.
Your personalised itinerary will include our consultants’ honest recommendations for every stop – places they’ve actually been and keep going back to. Check out this guide to food in Italy to learn more.
