Norway is a Scandinavian country. Iceland is a Nordic one, and that's not quite the same thing. Different languages (Norwegian and Icelandic), different currencies (the krone and the króna), and noticeably different cultures, even if the outlook feels similar.

Both were carved by glaciers, and both have fjords worth exploring. In Norway, that means green, vertical scenery: the Flåm Railway through steep valleys, a cruise from Aurlandsfjord into UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord, and wander the painted wooden wharves of Bergen.

The main difference is Iceland itself. It's volcanic and geothermal, and home to a fraction of the people – around 380,000, against Norway's 5.5 million.

Here, geysers crack the silence at Geysir, Gullfoss thunders over its canyon, and black sand beaches stretch along the south coast. You'll cross ancient lava fields, watch icebergs glide toward the sea, and soak in the warm, mineral-rich water of hot springs.

In winter, yes. But timing is everything.

The aurora borealis needs dark skies, so it typically appears between late September and early April, when the nights draw in. Both countries sit far enough north to see it. Get away from the cities, and northern Norway's dark skies and Iceland's wide-open countryside both make for easier viewing.

It's a natural phenomenon, never a guarantee. Clear skies and a little patience do most of the work, and heading away from town lights gives you the best chance.

If you're travelling in summer, you'll swap the aurora for the midnight sun. This is when daylight stretches almost round the clock. Picture standing among the fjords near midnight, still in daylight.

There's no one best time to travel. Summer and winter are simply different, and both are wonderful.

Summer (May to September) brings long days and the midnight sun. Roads and hiking trails are at their most accessible, which makes it the easiest season for a first trip.

Winter trades daylight for snow-covered landscapes, cosy evenings and the chance to see the northern lights. Some high-mountain routes close, so winter itineraries focus on accessible highlights near the coast.
