A few days is enough to take in the highlights – the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, a wander down Champs-Élysées. But if you can stretch it further, you can add extra days in Paris to your trip to see more.

Fancy a taste of royal life? A day tour to the Palace of Versailles gets you into the Hall of Mirrors – yes, the same one Louis XIV strutted through – plus the gardens and apartments linked to Marie Antoinette. Prefer something closer to nature? Monet’s water lilies are waiting in Giverny, just outside the city, for a slower kind of day.

We recommend at least 1 week – enough to take in Paris, Provence and the Riviera without feeling rushed. 10 days to 2 weeks lets you slow right down, with more time in the places you fall for and still see it all.

April to October is one of the best seasons to visit Paris and other parts of France. Paris sees warm, walkable weather with blooming gardens in spring, and warm evenings made for outdoor dining right through to autumn.

Southern France gets properly hot in high summer, often above 30°C (86°F) in Provence and along the Riviera. Perfect for swimming in the Mediterranean, meandering through Provençal markets, and long lunches in the shade. Summer is the most popular time to visit France, so make sure you book well in advance.

Travelling in late June or early July? That’s also lavender season in the Luberon, when the fields around Gordes and Sénanque Abbey turn a deep purple, and the vineyards of Provence are in full swing.

If you’d rather have quieter roads and milder days, late spring or early autumn are also a great choice.
