Most of our multi-country Nordic routes run in summer, roughly May to September, when days are long, and roads and ferries are at their most reliable.

Summer means plenty of daylight hours, and above the Arctic Circle you may catch the midnight sun, when the sun barely dips below the horizon. Winter trips trade daylight for the chance to see the northern lights (also known as the aurora borealis).

Two weeks is a comfortable minimum for a few countries. But if you are after a fuller sweep of the North, allow 3–4 weeks.

A 14-day trip pairs somewhere like Norway with Iceland especially well. They sit just a 2.5 to 3-hour flight apart, so very little of your tour disappears into transit.

A 28-day journey can take in Finland, Estonia, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland without ever feeling rushed.

The right length depends on how many countries you want to explore and how much you like to linger.

You might cross the Baltic Sea by overnight cruise, ride a scenic railway across a mountain plateau, then pick up a car for a self-drive leg. Flights between countries, such as Norway to Iceland, are arranged by your travel consultant.

If you hold a passport from Canada, the US, the UK, Australia or New Zealand, you won’t need a visa for visits of up to 90 days. Travellers from elsewhere may need a Schengen visa.

Each Nordic country has its own currency, so you’ll cross paths with euros, Swedish krona, Danish krone, Norwegian krone and Icelandic króna. The good news is that credit and debit cards are widely accepted, so you won’t need much cash.
