Camargue National Park

Wetland home to flamingos & wild horses

This vast wetland delta in France – where the Rhône meets the Mediterranean – is one of the Europe’s great wilderness areas.

It’s made up of more than 150,000 hectares of lagoons, salt marshes, rice paddies, and reed beds, threaded with channels and edged with white sand beaches.

Nature runs this place, though you’ll find man-made paths to follow throughout. Pink flamingos wade in the shallow pools. Wild horses graze on the marshland. Black bulls roam where they please. It’s a landscape that moves at its own pace with its own energy, and a day here has a way of quietly recalibrating yours.

The Camargue rewards slow travel. Hire a bike or a horse and take the tracks that weave between the étangs. Stop at a gardian (a Camargue cowboy) farm to learn how the land is worked. Save time for the Parc Ornithologique de Pont de Gau to get the best possible introduction to the region’s birdlife.
