Road winding through the mountainous Verdon Gorge

Corniche Sublime

Dramatic clifftop road above Verdon Gorge

The Corniche Sublime – literally “sublime cliff road” – earns its name, though it takes a certain composure to fully appreciate it. It’s a driving route that hugs the southern rim of the Verdon Gorge with confidence, challenging you to feel the same.

The route runs along the D71 from Aiguines to Castellane, tracing the southern edge of the canyon with a succession of viewpoints that will slow you down as reliably as the bends. It’s one of France’s greatest scenic drives.

You'll want to stop at the road bridge over Artuby Canyon (Pont de l'Artuby) – one of the highest in the whole of Europe. Thrillseekers bungee jump from this point. See if you’re brave enough to take a dizzying look into the valley below.

A little further along is the Balcons de la Mescla, the most dramatic viewpoint over the gorge. Pull over (where it’s safe to), hold tight to the railings, and try to get a sense of the scale. The sunlight reflects off the blue river waters far below, glinting like it’s winking up at you.
